Bringing the justice of literacy and the mercy of relationship together.

At Jericho Road, we believe that literacy is more than an educational issue—it is a justice issue.

The ability to read, write, understand information, and engage confidently with the world opens doors to employment, education, community participation, and independence. Yet millions of Australians continue to face barriers that most of us rarely notice.

Research suggests that around 44% of Australian adults have literacy skills below the level needed to confidently navigate modern life and work, affecting more than seven million people across Australia. [readingwritinghotline]

When people struggle with literacy, everyday tasks can become overwhelming:

  • Reading a letter from Centrelink
  • Understanding medication instructions
  • Completing job applications
  • Supporting children with schoolwork
  • Accessing online services
  • Avoiding scams and misinformation

For many, limited literacy contributes to social isolation, reduced opportunities, and ongoing disadvantage.

Why Literal Justice?

Throughout Scripture, God consistently calls His people to seek justice for those who are vulnerable and excluded.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Isaiah 1:17

“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.”

Proverbs 31:8–9

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.
Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Literacy creates opportunities. Access to books creates opportunities. Learning English creates opportunities. Confidence creates opportunities.

When educational resources are unevenly distributed, opportunities become unevenly distributed as well. Literal Justice seeks to address this practical need through the local church.

As Tim Keller writes:

“There is an inequitable distribution of both goods and opportunities in this world. Therefore, if you have been assigned the goods of this world by God and you don’t share them with others, it isn’t just stinginess, it is injustice.”
