God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
– Psalm 46:1
Australia is a land of extremes and while beautiful our land can also be harsh and hostile. We see this in the sudden destruction of bush fires and floods. What is less seen, because it is a slow yet devastating change, is drought. In times of crisis, Jericho Road seeks to support those in need. We aim to assist and equip local congregations to provide practical help to those around them and among them. We run emergency appeals to raise funds which are then distributed to those in need via Presbyterian churches in affected areas. When events arise where assistance is needed for practical things like clean up efforts or delivering donated items, we call on our supporters to lend a helping hand where possible.
All funds raised through Jericho Road for emergency appeals are distributed via local congregations in affected areas wherever possible. We reserve 5% of your donation to go towards the administration of the funds and Jericho Road infrastructure that allows us to conduct these appeals*.
Congregations can distribute funds as they wish – so sometimes it is to a specific family for a specific purpose, other times they will purchase food or vouchers and distribute those more widely to those in need. The reason for this is that they know the real needs of the people in their area, and they can deliver the assistance in person. This in turn allows for the assistance to be provided thoughtfully and as an act of God’s people in that town, showing the love of Jesus.
For example, in one town a local congregation have arranged (among other things) to provide vehicle servicing for farm vehicles during a drought. This is often left undone during drought due to the cost, which then results in breakdowns and further unexpected costs in the long run. It also means local service station businesses are not getting income, which affects their families as well. So, by providing funds to do this it helps the farmers and the local businesses. Another congregation purchased fresh water for distribution and still another feed for stock.
Every donation during these times shows that we, like the Samaritan, are ready to be the people who love our neighbours. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
If you’d like to help, please follow the link below to donate and choose “Emergency Response” as the purpose of donation, and then “Flood Appeal”.
If you have been affected by the impact of a disaster, please get in touch.
* If you have nominated a specific area for your donation to be used we will allocate it to that ministry. From time to time needs change and so we may need to reallocate your donation. If we need to do this we will allocate it to a ministry as closely aligned to the original purpose as possible. Please contact our Partner Ministries Team at partnership@jerichoroad.org.au if you need more information. Also note that up to 5% of donated funds may be allocated for the administration of Jericho Road.
The Presbyterian Church in NSW has many congregations in regional and rural areas that can be affected by natural disasters. At these times, our brothers and sisters in these places need us to pray for them and their communities.
