Life is a great blessing! We gain pleasure and a sense of purpose from being in the world. We form connections with God, people, and creation itself. This gives a sense of order, and we find hope and form aspirations. Yet, we experience this life in a sinful and broken world. We can follow every rule and check every box, and life can fall well short of our expectations and go cruelly “off script”. Sickness strikes, prosperity is lost, disability leaves a mark, relationships break down, children denounce their parents, marriages dissolve. We experience confusion, fear, and pain beyond any balm. We experience disorder.
One of the great truths of the Bible, if not the greatest truth, is that God creates order from disorder. The greatest truth? Yes! But isn’t the greatest truth of the Bible is that Jesus died for sins and rose again so that sinners can enjoy eternal life? Indeed, that is a great truth. But even the life, death and resurrection of Jesus is an outworking of order from disorder and is indeed the ultimate expression of it. For the first thing that God wants us to know that he creates order from disorder.
This is part of the character of God that the Old Testament prophets and writers reflected on and found hope and courage. When we face times of disorder, we can find solace by taking a deep dive into the Old Testament prophets and writers, discover the hope and the wonder they had in God, and draw rock-solid courage during the utmost of discouraging times. Join me on my journey of discovering how God creates order from disorder.
