Today is International Women’s Day. It’s a global day celebrating social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
We wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate the 110 years of social services and mercy ministries in the NSW Presbyterian Church. So an ebook and podcast have been released today!
The collaboration came about when we (Jericho Road) realised that our organisation wouldn’t exist as is does today without the incredible work of Presbyterian women way back in the 1800s.
We approached the Women’s Ministry Committee about collaborating on something that would help tell the stories of these women and highlight the significance of women’s roles in justice and mercy ministries ever since.
They thought that was an exciting focus for the first season of their podcast and the collaboration began.
The stories of the podcast range from ladies making sandwiches to deliver to homeless men, to a nurse serving over in Ethiopia and Somalia in the 1960s.
Hope 103.2 interviewed Sylvia Siu, podcast host and Janette Baker from Jericho Road about the collaboration.
It has been an inspiring and informative project, learning about the history of the Presbyterian Church’s justice and mercy ministries – and the work that is currently being undertaken across the denomination. It is our hope that the stories of women past and present will inspire others to look at the opportunities around them to seek justice, show mercy and make Jesus known.
